Calgary Herald by Javier Blax.   Exxon Mobil Corp., Royal Dutch Shell Plc and Chevron Corp., are jumping into American shale with gusto, planning to spend a combined $10 billion this year, up from next to nothing only a few years ago.  (Many Alaskan and Alberta elected officials -- obviously -- have no concept of the principle of worldwide competition for attracting natural resource investment dollars.  -dh) Critical Thinking The end of the Alaska Legislature's 2017, third trimester approaches.  The socialist-leaning House majority has cut off debate on their [...]

5-12-16 How The Federal Government Stole Alaska’s Statehood Birthright

Even if the federal government were to restore the natural resource birthright it has stolen from the 49th State, Alaskans would STILL remain challenged.  For when its citizens enjoyed what seemed to be unlimited oil wealth 3-4 decades ago, it taxed more and spent more and more -- until it had developed an unsustainable lifestyle.  So, we do hope that great leadership can free Alaska of the federal overreaching jurisdiction and violations of due process described below.  But then, equally great leadership -- with disciplined citizen support -- must establish sustainable government services [...]

11/27/14 Canadian and American Leaders Make Pipelines A Political Issue

Alaska Dispatch by Alex DeMarban.  Gov.-elect Bill Walker (NGP Photo) on Monday began the thorny task of meeting with officials from the Alaska Gasline Development Corp., an entity he targeted during his campaign as ripe for cuts, with its high salaries and the state's dueling gas pipeline projects. Commentary.  We have long respected the objective reporting and wise commentary that the Calgary Herald provides its fortunate readers.  Today, Editorial Board writer, David Marsden , provides a concise, common sense, pipeline perspective.  In it, he reveals the harmful and illogical pipeline agendas embraced by [...]

10-29-14 Stick With Both Pipeline Projects For The Time Being

ADN by Dermot Cole.  Gov. Sean Parnell argues that the Alaska Stand Alone Pipeline is a priceless insurance policy against the possibility that the oil companies will decide by 2019 that they do not want to build a larger pipeline. Challenger Bill Walker counters that it is a pricey plan that would ensure energy costs in Anchorage would go up. He wants to stop spending money on ASAP as soon as possible. Parnell said the two gas lines should be pursued for the same reason that the proposed Susitna-Watana dam should remain in [...]

White House "Conspires" With Enviro Activists (i.e. as if we didn't know.  And, here's a playful, yet serious, video example.  -dh) Peninsula Clarion OpEd by Mike Chenault (NGP Photo) .  I’ve been involved in state politics for 14 years, and I have to say, the progress the Legislature and Governor Sean Parnell (NGP Photo) have made together in the last 2 years is a real highlight.   We’re farther than ever getting a big gasline built. I’ve never seen all the necessary parties aligned like they are today. They’re spending money, committing [...]

ADN OpEd, by Governor Sean Parnell (NGP Photo).  For too long, Alaskans' dream of a natural gas pipeline has been just that -- a dream. That changed last week with the groundbreaking passage of Senate Bill 138. For the first time in Alaska's history, we have alignment of all necessary parties for a project, authorization from the Legislature to proceed into the early engineering and design phase and a clear path forward on a gas line, the Alaska LNG Project.

As our faithful readers prepare for tonight's State of the Union Speech, we also await rationale justifying the continuing overreaching jurisdiction of the White House.  Please review our editorial written two years ago.  We briefed readers on a big change: this president was altering the authority to take over the economy.  Former administrations planned to exercise broad economic powers only in the face of a national emergency.  The current White House added a provision enabling it to take dictatorial powers in 'peacetime' as well.  Perhaps a reading of our Executive [...]

1-25-14 Parnell Introduces Gasline Legislation

ADN.  Gov. Sean Parnell on Friday introduced legislation to move ahead on his proposal to make the state a financial partner with Alaska's oil producers and pipeline company TransCanada in a liquefied natural gas project. The state already has signed commercial agreements with the industry players, and Senate Bill 138 aims to put that framework into law. The 49-page measure calls for a new subsidiary of the public Alaska Gasline Development Corporation to own shares in an LNG plant and marine terminal proposed for Nikiski where the liquefied gas would [...]
