Comment: Tax Freedom Day In Alaska Was April 5.  In Canada it was June 11 (See below).  We ask: "When will North American governments begin relinquishing economic control over citizens in favor of free enterprise solutions?"  The answer to that question in large measure will determine the future success of energy independence, national security, job creation, economic wellbeing and personal freedom.  -dh

Monday, June 11 was Tax Freedom Day, the day Canadians finally earned enough money to pay all the taxes they owe to all levels of government for the year. Tax Freedom Day arrived one day later than in 2011, which underscores a worrying trend of tax increases across Canada.

To celebrate Tax Freedom Day and bring attention to the array of taxes Canadians pay, the Fraser Institute produced a satirical R&B song and music video (watch it on YouTube). Manitoba is the best place in Canada for oil and gas investment, followed by Saskatchewan and Alberta. Oklahoma ranks No. 1 worldwide in our annual survey measuring and comparing the investment climate of 147 oil- and gas-producing regions based on the opinions of petroleum executives and managers. New Brunswick and Quebec ranked last among Canadian jurisdictions this year.

The Private Cost of Public Queues
Lengthy waits for surgery cost Canadian patients a combined $1.08 billion in lost time and productivity in 2011. This report calculates the average value of time lost during the work week at $1,144 for each of the estimated 941,321 Canadians waiting for treatment in 2011. When considering hours outside the work week, including evenings and weekends but excluding eight hours of sleep per night, the estimated cost of waiting jumps to almost $3.29 billion, or about $3,490 per patient.
