Now to Recognize Good News - Canada's Energy Man of the Year!
Thanks, Alaska Standard and Dan Fagan, For Caring About Alaska's Future!
Calgary Herald by Dena O'Meara. Oil patch veteran Charlie Fischer has been named Energy Person of the Year by the Energy
Council of Canada for his contributions to the oil and gas industry as well as his strong support of community and educational programs in Calgary and Alberta. The award, established in 2001, recognizes leaders in Canada who have made significant contributions at national and international energy sectors. Fischer, retired president and chief executive of Nexen Inc., worked his way up the corporate ladder, starting as an engineer with Dome Petroleum and working at various companies including TransCanada Pipelines, before landing at Nexen in 1994. By 2001 he was appointed president and CEO of the company which made a name for itself in Yemen. Fischer was instrumental in Nexen pursuing what resulted in a huge North Sea oil find, the Buzzard field, and on to tackling new technologies in the Alberta oil sands at Long Lake. Well recognized for his trademark handlebar mustache, Fischer also is heavily invested in education and community programs. He sits on the Pure Technologies and University of Calgary boards, co-chairs the Alberta Climate Change Central board, and is on the Dean's Advisory Council of the University of Calgary's Faculty of Medicine. He also is chair of Hull Child and Family Foundation, and is involved in the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation. His many awards include the Hal Codwin Award for Excellence in International Business, the Haskayne School of Business Distinguished Leader award, the Canadian Engineering Leader award, and the 2009 Resource Person of the Year.
